The winning word was femininity. With that word, Gracie Schroeder, a 5th grade student from Salina Christian Academy, took 1st place at the 60th Topeka Capital-Journal Regional Spelling Bee.
48 students from northeast Kansas were on hand for the 1 hour 45 minute Bee on Saturday, held at the Topeka West High School Douglas P. Goheen theater.
2nd place went to Alexis Marie Edelman, of Nemaha County, a 6th grader at F.A.S.T. Homeschool Group.
The 3rd place winner was an 8th grader from Abilene Middle School, Braedon Smith, of Dickinson County.
Judges were Darcy Kraus, Elementary Language Arts Consulting Teacher for USD 501 Topeka, and Lori Davenport, Speech Language Pathologist for Basehor and Tonganoxie Elementary Schools.
