Kansas Second District Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins will visit the Guantanamo Bay detention facility with officials from the Leavenworth area this Friday.
According to Jenkins, this trip is still important, even though the clock has run out on moving detainees while President Obama is still in office.
“President Obama may have finally abandoned the notion of using an executive order to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay,” said Jenkins. “We need to ensure that his and future Administrations don’t begin to reconsider it.”
Jenkins also feels it is important to show the local officials what is involved at the facility.
“This trip, my second, will help provide our local and state officials and community leaders with the resources they need to better understand why GITMO is the best and only place for these dangerous terrorists,” Jenkins said.
State Senator Steve Fitzgerald. State Representatives Tony Barton and Willie Dove, Leavenworth Mayor Larry Dedeke, Leavenworth County Commissioner Mark Preisinger, and Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson will join Jenkins on the trip.
“I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure the President’s flawed campaign promise never becomes a reality,” Jenkins added.
