March 18, 2013-For the second game in a row Emporia State battled back from a double digit deficit in the first half, but Augustana’s Alex Feeney hit two free throws with .7 seconds left to hand the Lady Hornets a 75-74 loss in the NCAA Division II Central Regional Championship game. The clock went to 0:00 as the foul was called and after a replay review it was determined there were still.7 seconds left.
The Lady Hornets found themselves trailing by 15 at 35-20 with 2:41 left in the first half. They cosed the half on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to ten at the intermission. Emporia State was just one of 12 from behind the three-point line in the opening 20 minutes as Augustana went six of 14 from behind the arc.
Augie scored the first points of the second half to go up 39-27 when Emporia State rattled off a 13-2 run to pull within one point at 41-40 with 13:30 left. The Vikings pushed the lead back to eight points at 58-50 with 7:58 left. Rachel Hanf then hit a jumper in the lane and Laura Patrick connected on a three-pointer to pull the Lady Hornets within 58-55 with 7:04 remaining. Quick scored in the lane with 6:43 left and hit two free throws with 6:16 remaining to complete a 9-0 run as Emporia State took their first lead since it was 4-2 in the first half.
There were six ties and nine lead changes over the final six minutes with neither team taking more than a three-point lead. With Augustana leading 69-67 Hanf hit jumper in the lane and was fouled. She completed the three point play to give Emporia State a 70-69 lead with 53.7 seconds left. After a missed shot by Augie, Rheanna Egli got the rebound and was fouled with :41.0 left. She hit both free throws to give the Lady Hornets a 72-69 lead.
Emily Schulte was fouled with :35.2 left and hit both free throws to pull Augie within a point at 72-71. Emporia State turned the ball over on the inbound pass and Cami Koehn hit a lay-up to give the Vikings a 73-72 lead with :32.5 remaining. The Lady Hornets worked the ball down and Quick was fouled with :13.0 left. She hit both free throws to give Emporia State a 74-73 lead.
After a Viking timeout with 6.2 seconds left, Emporia State forced a miss by Schulte that was rebounded by Alex Feeney. As the clock expired a foul was called on Emporia State. After a video review it was determined that .7 seconds remained and Feeney would be at the line. she hit both free throws to send Augustana to the Elite Eight for the first time in school history.
Quick led Emporia State with 18 points and eight rebounds. Egli had 17 points, Hanf 16 and Patrick 14 points for the Lady Hornets.
Egli, Quick and Patrick were named to the All-Tournament team and joined by Michelle Fisher of Southwestern Oklahoma State and Most Outstanding Player Alex Feeney of Augustana.
The Lady Hornets end the season 23-9 after winning the MIAA Tournament Championship in their third straight trip there and advancing to the Regional Final for the second straight year. They are set to return eight players that saw action in at least 19 games this year and six players that started at least three games.
Hanf finished her career as the 18th leading scorer in Lady Hornet history with 1,218 points and was third in made three pointers with 208.
This was the tenth regional final appearance for the Lady Hornets who are now 5-5 in the Sweet 16.
Emporia State went 16-3 after starting the season 7-6.
