After Sunday’s game Royals reliever Greg Holland was named as a replacement player for the American League All Star team for Tuesday night’s game at Citi Field in New York. Holland takes the roster spot originally given to Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma, who can’t pitch because he pitched Sunday in Seattle’s own game against the Los Angeles Angels. The 27 year old Holland has 22 saves this season and hasn’t blown a save since the first weekend of the year in Philadelphia. He also has the best strikeout-per nine innings ratio of any American League pitcher, and second in the majors to Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman. Holland, along with previously named Royals All Stars Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez, flew to New York on team owner David Glass’ private plane following Sunday’s loss at Cleveland. All three are making their first All-Star Game appearance.
