Senate Takes Up Gun Theft Value Issue

Jeff King

The Kansas Senate has take up the issue of guns, but not in any way you may have heard recently.  Senator Jeff King of Montgomery County put forth a measure that sets the value of the crime of stealing a firearm at up to 25 thousand dollars even if the weapon is only worth a thousand dollars.

He said, “This bill would treat the theft of a firearm in the same fashion as the theft of something of the value between a thousand and 25 thousand dollars.”

King said the use of a stolen firearm in the commission of a crime makes that weapon as valuable as whatever is stolen during a crime using that firearm.
