Update: Police ID Shooting Victim, Still Searching For Suspect

Police are responding to a reported shooting in the 1300 block of SW Western.

The shooting occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the Westview Apartments, 1324 SW Western.

Lt. Ron Gish with the Topeka Police Department said the victim was shot after answering a knock on the door of the apartment.

Police say the shooting victim has died.

The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Benjamin D. Jackson of Topeka.

The suspect is described as a black male, wearing red shorts, and no shirt.

He is said to be between 5’5″-5’7″ tall, carrying a black shirt, possibly in his late teens or early 20s, with hair cut into a “fade”.

Police say the suspect is possibly traveling in a silver, 4-door vehicle at this time, but was seen leaving the scene headed south on foot.

A Kansas Highway Patrol chopper is circling the area and K-9 units are also assisting in the search.
