Saturday saw city action in cross country, tennis, and volleyball.

CROSS COUNTRY

Hayden and Washburn Rural competed at the Bonner Springs Invitational. Thanks to three top-10 placers, the Rural girls won the meet. Heidi Scheiber placed 5th, Madeline Carter was 7th, and Christina Funk placed 8th. Keeley Wagner (13th), Jaidyn Bogren (14th), and Sofie Conard (18th) gave the Junior Blues six top-20 finishers for the day. Riley Schmidtlein placed 36th to lead the Hayden girls. On the boys side, Hayden’s Tanner Newkirk continues his strong season as he placed second and helped Hayden to a sixth-place team finish. Dawson Adams placed 20th for the Wildcats. Washburn Rural’s best time belonged to Arrik White, who finished 25th. The Junior Blues placed eighth as a team.

Highland Park, Seaman, Shawnee Heights, Topeka High and Topeka West sent contingents to the Baldwin Invitational. The day’s best finish on the boy’s side belonged to Shawnee Heights freshman Kory Sutton, who placed ninth. Topeka West’s Luke Phelps-Roper (10th) and Lenny Njoroge (15th) also came home in the top 20 as the Chargers took sixth out of 11 full teams. In the girls race, Kylie Phillips took sixth for Heights.

GIRLS TENNIS

Hayden was scheduled to compete at the Olathe South Invitational, but it was postponed due to rain. They’ll play on Monday.

VOLLEYBALL

Topeka West had a good showing at the Russell Invitational, reaching the championship match before falling to 1A powerhouse Central Plains:
