This week’s Azura Credit Union Athletes of the Week are Seaman senior wrestler Landon Willard and Topeka High freshman basketball player Kiki Smith.
Willard is off to a strong start this season for the Vikings, with an 18-1 record wrestling at 145 pounds. Willard has qualified for state twice, but missed out last year due to injury. He’s now compiled 97 career victories heading into this week’s action. We spoke to Landon about being motivated to return to state, his strengths on the mat, what 100 career wins would mean, and more.
Smith has sparked the #1 ranked team in class 6A to a 6-0 start, scoring 20 points in each of her first five games and pouring in 14 points in a win over Emporia last Tuesday. The standout guard also starred for the Central Region team that won the Jr NBA World Championships over the summer. We spoke to Kiki about that World Championship experience, what she loves about basketball, playing with her older sister, and more.
