This week’s Azura Credit Union Athletes of the Week are Hayden sophomore cross country runner Tanner Newkirk and Washburn Rural sophomore tennis player Sheriden Wichman.
Newkirk outran the competition in the Crimson flight of the Rim Rock Classic on Saturday, posting a time of 16:11.1 to win the race. He’s run race-leading times for the Wildcat team all season long, following up an excellent freshman season that saw him place 12th in the 4A state meet. Newkirk also excels in distance running during track season, placing 4th in the 1600 and 2nd in the 3200 in the state meet last spring. We spoke to Tanner about winning at Rim Rock, his pre-race rituals, and much more.

Wichman claimed the city #1 singles tennis last Thursday, defeating Seaman’s Elise Schriner 8-5 in the championship match. She played in the 6A state tournament as a freshman in doubles before moving to singles play this season for a young Rural squad. Wichman was also a part of last winter’s 6A state championship basketball team. We spoke to Sheridan about her improvement so far this season, the success she’s enjoyed in her brief high school career, and much more.
