Big 12 Championship Day 1 recap: Oklahoma State, Kansas State prevail

The Big 12 Championship tournament opened up with just two games on Wednesday night but an almost neverending amount of drama thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wednesday was the only day of this year’s tournament that allowed fans from the public to watch in person. Starting Thursday the only fans will be recipients of a small number of tickets allocated to each remaining team.

On a bizarre and powerful day across sports a pair of games between the lowest seeds in the Big 12 provided a respite with a couple phenomenal finishes and exciting basketball.

Oklahoma State def. Iowa State 72-71

The Cowboys and Cyclones had 18 lead changes in Game 1 of the Big 12 Championship, including a pair of them in the waning moments of the game. Iowa State’s Terrence Lewis crossed over Oklahoma State’s Yor Anei and finished with a layup to put the Cyclones ahead 71-70 with just eight seconds to play. OSU responded immediately, though, with Isaac Likekele scoring a layup of his own to take the lead back for the Cowboys. Iowa State wasn’t able to get a clean shot off as time expired. Likekele led Oklahoma State in scoring with 21 points while Prentiss Nixon had a game-high 25 points in the losing effort for Iowa State.

K-State def. TCU 53-49
