Destructive tornado rolls across northeast Kansas Tuesday

A large, destructive tornado roared across northeast Kansas Tuesday evening.

The storm was on the ground for more than an hour and heavily damaged several structures on the south side of Lawrence and in Linwood, Kansas in the western suburbs of Kansas City.

FOX4 in Kansas City reported that Douglas County officials told them of six injuries that required hospital treatment in the Lawrence area.

The storm debris briefly closed the airfield at Kansas City International Airport, delaying flights there.

A least a dozen homes have been destroyed or damaged in Linwood, Kansas, about 30 miles west of Kansas City, the Kansas City Star reported.

The National Weather Service in Topeka said that a tornado was reported south of Lone Star shortly after 6 p.m. It was on the ground moving toward southeast Lawrence around 6:20 p.m.

The storm reached Linwood and Bonner Springs before 7 p.m. It then moved toward the Kansas Speedway and the Legends Outlets in Kansas City, Kansas and continued east.

Damage assessments will continue Wednesday morning, but no fatalities have been reported.
