Gas prices good for now, says AAA Kansas

Gas prices in Kansas are really good right now.

“We’ve been really seeing some summer savings at the pumps in recent weeks,” said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. “The past week has been a pretty surprising drop in gas prices, both in Kansas and nationally. Here in the Sunflower State, we dropped 5 cents a gallon and right now, we’re at $2.54 a gallon average.”

That’s about 18 cents less than the national average.

“Refinery usage in the U.S. is at its highest level since January,” said Steward. “That’s resulted in gasoline stocks being at very healthy levels. That’s really helping us meet our robust summer demand.”

It’s obviously too early to tell if Thursday’s incident in the Strait of Hormuz will have any impact on prices, but it underscores the continued volatility in the market.

“Gas prices are constantly evolving, by the day, by the hour,” said Steward. “Certainly, geopolitical issues outside the U.S. can always impact that.”

Brent Crude was at $61.69 a barrel, up more than two percent as of 9 a.m. Central Thursday.
