One person was killed and five others were taken to hospitals after a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 75 in Osage County Thursday night.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that around 7:50 p.m. crews were called to a quarter of a mile north of West 229th Street on U.S. Highway 75 north of Lyndon.
A 2003 Chevy Silverado driven by 20-year-old Darian A. Hess of Topeka was northbound on U.S. Highway 75 when the Silverado attempted to pass a commercial motor vehicle with insufficient clearance. The Silverado hit head on on the West shoulder with a southbound 2008 Dodge Durango driven by 33-year-old Amber M. Walters of Lyndon.
A passenger in the vehicle driven by Hess, 24-year-old Jennarene S. Hawkins died at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.
Hess was taken to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Walters and three child passengers, ages 9, 2, and 1, were taken to Stormont Vail for treatment.
