Ichabod Offense Clicks in Win

The Washburn women’s basketball team won their fifth-straight home game on Saturday afternoon with a 82-75 decision over Pittsburg State. The Ichabods improve to 13-9 overall and 7-6 in MIAA action while the Gorillas fall to 12-9 (8-5 MIAA).

Pittsburg State scored the first four points and quickly jumped out to an 11-3 lead three minutes into the game. Trailing 14-7, Shelbe Piggie ignited the Washburn offense with a three-pointer that started an 18-3 scoring tear that put Washburn in front, 25-17. Hunter Bentley closed out the opening quarter with a made free throw to put Washburn in front, 26-19. The Ichabods shot 62.5 percent from the field (10-of-16) and hit three triples in the quarter.

Washburn led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter before Pittsburg State went on a 6-0 run in the final minute of the second quarter to get within one, 41-40. With two seconds left in the first half, Bentley was fouled attempting a three-pointer and made two of the three free throws to give Washburn a a 43-40 advantage at the break.

Washburn opened the second half on a 10-2 scoring run with points scored by four different Ichabods to lead 53-42 at the 7:19 mark. The Gorillas stayed in the game by going on a 12-5 run to close out the third period trailing by six, 63-57.

The Ichabods started the fourth frame going 3-for-3 from deep with triples from Piggie, Bentley, and Reagan Phelan. With 18 seconds remaining, Pittsburg State was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws to make it a five point game, 80-75, but it was too late as Phelan scored the last two points of the game on free throws for the seven point victory.

Both teams shot fairly even as the Ichabods finished with a 48.3 field goal percentage (29-of-60) and shot at a 45 percent clip (9-of-20) from behind the arc while the Gorillas shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the floor and 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from three-point land. Washburn out rebounded Pittsburg State, 34-28, and pulled down 13 offensive boards that the Ichabods turned into 18 points. The Ichabods also forced 17 turnovers for 23 points.

Bentley led the Ichabods with a season-high 22 points after shooting 7-for-14 from the field and going 6-for-9 from the charity stripe. Bentley also led the team with eight rebounds, five assists, and five steals while also blocking one shot. Piggie, Phelan, and McAfee all contributed 13 points. Mia Castaneda was 3-for-6 from behind the arc.

For Pittsburg State, Tristan Gregg and Athena Alvarado combined for 52 of the Gorillas’ 75 points.

Washburn will travel down to Oklahoma next week for games against Northeastern State (Feb. 13) and new MIAA opponent Rogers State (Feb. 15
