Sub-state volleyball took place this past Saturday, and when the dust settled, nine teams from the 580 Preps coverage area punched their tickets to the state tournament.
Washburn Rural and Free State are off to Salina for the 6A tournament. Free State (24-12) is the eighth seed and in a pool with Garden City, Blue Valley, and Blue Valley North. Washburn Rural (36-5) is the number two seed and their pool includes Gardner-Edgerton, Derby, and Shawnee Mission Northwest.
There will be plenty of local presence in Hutchinson, where the 4A and 3A state tournaments are being held. In class 4A, Holton (30-11) is seeded fourth and will meet Andale, Louisburg and Nickerson in pool play. Hayden (26-14) is the seventh seed and will play Independence, Circle, and Eudora.
Royal Valley (34-6, third seed), Silver Lake (29-11, sixth seed) and Burlington (18-18, eighth seed) are all in the 3A mix. Burlington’s pool includes Beloit, Cheney and Phillipsburg, while Royal Valley and Silver Lake are in the same pool with Frontenac and Nemaha Central.
In the 2A tournament in Dodge City, Wabaunsee (36-3, third seed) and Jefferson County North (32-8, seventh seed) are both in the same pool, along with Spearville and Belle Plaine.
Pool play takes place on Friday, with the top two teams in each pool advancing to bracket play on Saturday.
