Overseas developments pushing pump prices, says AAA Kansas

Gas prices are going up in Kansas.

“We’ve seen a little bit of a jump this week,” said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. “We’re at $2.09 a gallon on average across Kansas and that’s up nine cents over the past week.”

This change is more about policy and less about driving demand.

“I think we’re seeing some impact of geopolitical issues, U.S. sanctions on Venezuela and Iran and then OPEC, as we’ve talked about, has decreased their production.”

That decrease is in effect through June, so we may have seen the bottom of the gas price curve for now.

“It’s hard to say exactly where gas prices will go, but the trend is up here in the past few weeks,” said Steward. “It’s likely as the weather improves as we get to spring and then summer travel season we could most likely see prices going up at the pump.”

The national average was $2.32 as of Monday.
