Phelan’s Five Threes Leads Ichabods Over Blue Tigers

Paced by 10 three-pointers the Washburn Ichabods ended their 2018-19 road schedule in winning fashion on Saturday, downing Lincoln, 80-70, at Jason Gym. While stretching the series lead to 29-0 , the Ichabods also improved to 18-8 on the year and moved back into second in the MIAA standings, albeit a tie, as they climbed to 13-4 in league play.

Shooting a combined 14 of 35 from the field during the opening half, the Ichabods were even more efficient from three-point range as they converted 4-of-10 in the first before knocking down 4-of-6 in the second period. Reagan Phelan led the offensive charge early with a pair of threes as part of an Ichabod 8-2 run during the opening frame.

Leading 16-15 to start the second, Washburn continued to push the tempo behind an 8-3 run. Phelan again added to the cause with a pair of threes, finishing the half with 14 points. Though quick, the run was efficient as the Ichabods were 3-for-4 from the floor, with Hunter Bentley contributing a jumper as she finished the day with 14.

At the 3:58 mark, Taylor Blue netted three of her 19 points on the day as she pushed the Ichabod margin to, 33-22, before Bentley joined the Washburn three party, ending a scoreless drought, giving the Ichabods their largest lead of the contest. Lincoln (10-16, 2-15 MIAA) though closed the half with back-to-back buckets trimming the Washburn advantage to 36-26 at the break.

In the third, with Washburn leading 42-32, the Blue Tigers began to mount a comeback, narrowing the margin to two midway through the period as they rattled off eight unanswered points. Lincoln however was unable to regain an advantage, though continued to pressure the Washburn defense as it lingered within a possession or two till the end of the frame.

Unable to score from distance during the third, Phelan and Blue hit a pair threes in consecutive possessions midway through the fourth, pushing the Washburn lead to 59-51 with 5:19 remaining. Moments later, the duo opened the Ichabod margin to 12, 65-53, behind a 6-0 spurt with 3:04 to play.

Trailing 71-61 with 1:07 left, Lincoln pieced together an 8-2 run, chipping the Ichabod lead down to four, 73-69, with 44 seconds to go. The rally however fell short as Washburn closed the contest converting 7-for-8 from line.

With a career-best five triples, Phelan finished with 19 points. As result, she moved into ninth in the Washburn record book for career threes made, 117, surpassing Casyn Buchman’s mark of 113 and also climbed 10 points past Corkey Stiger for 17th on the career scoring list, 1,057. Alexis McAfee was part of the quartet of double-figure scorers as she registered 16, as was 8-for-12 from the charity stripe with a pair of threes.

Although Washburn was outrebounded, 44-29, the Ichabods posted a season-low seven turnovers, while the defense tallied nine steals and four blocks.

Washburn closes the regular season next week as it returns to Lee Arena, hosting Northwest Missouri on Thursday, Feb. 28 before welcoming Missouri Western on Saturday, March 1 for the season finale.
