Topeka police say a man who barricaded himself inside a house in the 1000 block on NW Van Buren early Monday morning has been taken into custody.
Lt. Chris Heaven says the suspect was arrested without incident around 5:30 a.m.
Heaven told WIBW News Now that police did not consider the situation to be a standoff, as earlier reported.
“It was a situation where we were trying to talk him out of the residence,” said Heaven. “But it was not an armed situation or anything like that.”
According to Topeka Police Lt. Steve Roth, the suspect is thought to be involved with a Sunday night home invasion in North Topeka that left one man seriously injured.
The home invasion occurred in the 100 block on NE Highway 24. Police were called to the scene and found a male victim suffering from life threatening injuries.
Roth says the victim was transported by helicopter to KU Med Center. His current condition is not known.
In a news release sent Monday afternoon, Lt. Jennifer Cross says 31-year-old Howard Dale Burchfiel, was booked into the Shawnee County Jail for aggravated battery and aggravated burglary in relation to the home invasion. He also faces a weapons charge from a prior case.
The victim in Sunday night’s home invasion has been identified as 66-year-old Allen Wichman, of Topeka.
