For our seventh stop on this year’s Shawnee County Football Tour, we check in with the Washburn Rural Junior Blues.
LAST YEAR: The Junior Blues ran up a 6-2 regular season record and won a playoff game before being eliminated in the 6A Regional round. All three of their losses ended up being to either Manhattan or Topeka High, two of the Centennial League’s, and state’s, premier programs.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Blink and you’ll miss senior running back Jaylen Carter, one of the fastest players in the state who is hard to get a finger on in the open field. Senior Drake McCall looks to be next in a recently strong line of Rural linebackers. In the trenches, seniors Kort Mattison and Derek Walker are experienced and tough.
SCHEDULE: 09/06 EMPORIA 09/13 @ MANHATTAN 09/20 HAYDEN 09/27 @ JUNCTION CITY 10/04 @ TOPEKA WEST 10/11 TOPEKA HIGH 10/18 HIGHLAND PARK 10/25 @ SEAMAN 11/01 PLAYOFF GAME
