The vote was a close one but the Shawnee Heights School Board voted to allow Shawnee Heights High School to seek a new league and leave the Centennial League.
The USD 450 School Board voted 4-3 on Monday night to allow the T-Birds to go to a new league that is trying to form comprised of: Lansing, Leavenworth, DeSoto, Basehor-Linwood and Kansas City Turner.
Approval for the new league is needed from boards representing all six schools. If one board doesn’t approve, then the new league cannot be formed as you need six schools to form a league.
The league, which has not yet been named, would begin play during the 2018-19 school year.
Topeka West, Highland Park and Topeka-Seaman all thought and had discussions on joining this new potential league but decided to stay in the Centennial League.
The T-Birds have been in the Centennial League since 1975.
