After a long 24 hours filled with thoughts and emotions, legendary Silver Lake head football coach C.J. Hamilton is staying as the main man at the helm.
Except his coaching staff is now a bit different.
On Friday night, the Silver Lake Board of Education unanimously approved the hires of Travis Hamilton, son of C.J., and Nick Hamilton, nephew of C.J. Both are placed as assistant coaches at the high school level after the resignation of longtime assistant Mark Workman. Replacing Nick at the junior high level is Chris White, who was also accepted to be placed on the junior high staff.
BOE President Randy Matzke started the meeting, discussing the personnel changes on the table. After five minutes, a motion was passed for the board members to go into an executive session for 20 minutes.
After the brief pause, all seven members voted to accept. This all took place after a special meeting on Thursday night that saw community members voice their opinions in support of Travis Hamilton. On Thursday morning, C.J. Hamilton handed in his letter of resignation that Matzke described as a “wake up call.” Earlier on Friday morning, C.J. withdrew his resignation.
The leader of the historic powerhouse enters his 41st season as head coach this fall. Coach Hamilton has eight state championships and 390 victories, many with the coaching staff that has been by his side for 20-plus years.
Practice for the 2016 fall season starts on Monday, August 15th.
