In case you would need to make a claim on insurance for damage that happens as a result of the weather this spring, your company needs to know what they are covering.
“We’ve been getting a lot of calls as you would expect with storm damage, tornadoes, lots of flooding going on,” said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. “It’s important to take an inventory of what you have in your home. There’s some simple steps that everybody should take. First of all, grab your camera, your smartphone, a pen and paper and just take a tour of your home. Record everything that you would want your insurance company to replace.”
In order for them to replace it, it’s best to have proof that you bought it.
“Pull together copies of sales receipts and any other documentation,” said Steward. “Note the model and serial numbers of any other items if you have those. Once you have your home inventory created, make sure that you store that in a safe and easily accessible place.”
It’s also important to have an off-site backup of the information so that the event you’re trying to cover for doesn’t destroy your proof, too.
“Make sure that you also have enough insurance to cover everything on your inventory,” said Steward. “Once you add up all the costs, assess that with your insurance agent to make sure you have the right coverage to help you recover in case of an emergency or a disaster.”
If it seems overwhelming, start with a single room like your living room or kitchen and finish the inventory there first before moving on to the rest of the home.
