Topeka Fire investigators are still working to determine the cause of two fires before sunrise Sunday morning.
The first fire was at 1240 SE Republican Avenue shortly after 1:00 a.m. Damage in that case was relatively minor at $5000 in structural damage and $2000 in contents.
The second fire was at 1140 SW Western shortly after 04:15 a.m. That fire was much larger, as fire suppression crews reported heavy fire on the first and second stories of the dwelling. There was damage both to it and to 1108 SW Western.
The fire was contained and extinguished, but not before both structures sustained significant water and fire damage. No one was in either home.
Estimated structural damage is listed at $62,000; contents loss is being estimated at $15,000.00.
Working smoke detectors were not located within the structure of fire origin at either fire.
