Two people arrested in Topeka after officers discover stolen vehicle during traffic stop

Two people are in custody after a traffic stop in Topeka on Friday morning.

37-year-old Justin R. Shumway and 26-year-old Tina M. Funk are facing multiple charges.

Around 8:15 on Friday morning, a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to stop a Chevy Malibu for failing to signal a lane change.  The vehicle stopped in a driveway in the 200 block of NW Jay St. and the passenger, Shumway, of Topeka, fled on foot.  While running, Shumway was seen throwing a handgun which was later recovered and found to be a 9mm handgun.  He was apprehended on NW Studer while attempting to leave in another vehicle.  

Shumway was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on a charge of criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon as well as a federal warrant for parole violation from a previous charge of felon in possession of a firearm.

The Chevy Malibu was confirmed to be stolen out of Wichita, KS.  The driver, Funk, of Topeka, was booked into the Department of Corrections on an out of county misdemeanor warrant.  The investigation is ongoing including pending charges of driving without a license, misdemeanor obstruction, fail to signal movement prior to 100 feet, and possession of stolen property.
