NEWS RELEASE FROM SHAWNEE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE
Sheriff Brian C. Hill announces the arrests of two individuals after a brief pursuit involving a stolen vehicle in the southeast part of the county.
Earlier today around 12:15 a.m., a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted a traffic stop near SE 27th Street and Adams Street for a traffic infraction. A 2000 Chevy Silverado, reported stolen out of Topeka, failed to stop and a pursuit ensued. The Silverado drove through the Hi-Crest neighborhood, east on SE 37th Street, and north on SE California Avenue. The driver lost control of the vehicle near SE 30th Street and California Avenue, striking a fire hydrant. Two occupants fled the scene but were located a short time later.
The driver of the stolen vehicle, Shaquan R. Mitchell, 18, of Topeka, was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections with the following charges: Aggravated endangering of a child, felony flee and elude, possession of stolen property, leaving the scene of an accident, no driver’s license and other traffic infractions
The passenger, a 17 year old male, was arrested and transported to Juvenile Intake.
The Topeka Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol assisted with the incident. The incident is still under investigation.
