With the spring high school sports season upon us, the weekly crowning of our Wendy’s male and female Athletes of the Week continues.
This week we salute Washburn Rural sophomore swimmer Kristen Wolf and Topeka West senior tennis players Kyle Rice and Zach Shima.
Rice and Shima concluded their four-year doubles tennis partnership in the best way possible last weekend, winning the 5A state championship. The two seniors outlasted the tournament’s top seed, Mill Valley’s pair of Andrew Bock and Alec Bergeron, in a three-set thriller in the semifinals before dispatching the Maize team of Kaden Jobe and Chase Schreiner 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match. Rice and Shima finished their season with a 36-4 record. Both will go on to play tennis at KCAC schools – Shima at Bethel and Rice at Kansas Wesleyan.
Wolf has earned All-City and All-League honors this season in helping the Lady Junior Blues to team championships at both the city and league meets. At city, Wolf earned three first-place finishes, winning the 200m freestyle and swimming a leg in the 200m and 400m freestyle relays. In the league meet, Wolf was part of a 400m freestyle relay team that took home first in the final event of the day to clinch the team crown. Wolf’s versatility has been on display all season as she has competed in several different events for the Lady Junior Blues, but she’ll focus on the 100m breaststroke, the 200m individual medley, and the relay events at state this weekend.
