With the spring high school sports season upon us, the weekly crowning of our Wendy’s male and female Athletes of the Week continues.
This week we salute Topeka High senior swimmer Elena Almoguera and Hayden junior baseball player Wyatt Schumacher.
Almoguera successfully defended her state championship in the 100 breaststroke in the 6A state meet last weekend. Entering state as the sixth seed in the event, Almoguera qualified for the finals with the third best time and then out-touched runner up Marian Frick of Lawrence by just over two-tenths of a second with a time of 1:06.86. The foreign exchange student from Spain finishes her career as a Trojan as a two-time All-City, All-Class, and All-State performer. She has committed to swim collegiately at Canisius College in New York.
Schumacher has led the way at the plate and on the mound for a Wildcat team that qualified for state in Class 4A-I. In the district final against Abilene, Schumacher twirled a three-hit shutout, striking out 11 batters, and went 3-for-4 at the plate in leading Hayden to an 8-0 victory. He batted a team-leading .439 and also led the Wildcats with 21 RBI during the regular season. On the mound, he posted a 3.89 ERA over 27 innings pitched. Hayden plays Independence in round one at State in Salina on Thursday.
